The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The Highway 515 to Dunn Bridge stretch of Red River in New Mexico is 14 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV+ section. If you're coming from Taos it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The natural
beauty of unknown County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There are no other
sections to paddle along Red River than the Highway 515 to Dunn Bridge section. The beautiful Sangre De Cristo Mountains scenery is an added bonus. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: Garrapata Canyon is near Red River and is a great place; a tour to Red River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at
Cedar Springs. Be careful coming to the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, you might not ever want to go back home again. Red River is pretty arid generally; the wettest month of the year is commonly August, that's the one that rains the most, and January is the month with the least
moisture. High temperatures at Red River during the summer months are in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 40's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 30's with temperatures at Red River dipping down into the 0's all through winter nights.
