Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Mexico is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The nature scenery of Rio Arriba County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Abiquiu Dam to confluence with Rio Grande stretch of Rio Chama is 25 miles long
and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Espanola, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The San Juan and Jemez Mountains scenery is wonderful. You can enjoy
this stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Abiquiu Dam to confluence with Rio Grande stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: A forest close to Rio Chama is Santa Fe National Forest, and you can have a splendid hiking adventure along the Apache Trail.
Summertime highs at Rio Chama regularly tend to be in the 80's. All through the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Rio Chama. Rio Chama gets very little precipitation; the wettest
month of the year is usually August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is February. Yep, outdoors entertaining stuff truly is abundant here in the San Juan and Jemez Mountains. While you're here at Rio Chama you can take a hike along the Palacio Trail.
