The average New Mexico whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Los Ojos to El Vado Lake section is just one of many. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not
pack your sleeping bag too. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Los Ojos to El Vado Lake section of Rio Chama in New Mexico
is 15 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-III section of whitewater. When you're paddling down a San Juan and Jemez Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Rio Chama is commonly a reasonably dehydrated site; during August this area sees the most rain; May is when it's the driest. Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Rio Chama with nighttime
lows in the 40's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 30's, and nighttime lows at Rio Chama through the winter mostly sink into the 0's.
