The Monastary to Big Eddy section of Rio Chama in Rio Arriba County is 7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The Monastary to Big Eddy stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A bit of exercise and spending
some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The put-in is not too far from Espanola, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful San Juan and Jemez Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is
an area with not too many other rivers for that. The campgrounds here at Rio Chama are pretty good. The nature scenery of New Mexico and the cool fresh water beats anything. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip.
Briefly about the general area: It is very dry here at Rio Chama generally; the month with most of the rain is August, and April meanwhile is the driest month. Summertime highs at Rio Chama usually tend to be in the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 40's. The cold days of the winter come
with highs in the 30's while Rio Chama overnight low temperatures through the winter are in the 0's. A tremendous place near Rio Chama is Ojitos Canyon.
