The nature scenery of New Mexico and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a short drive from Espanola, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New Mexico you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other places
for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beauty of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is a great plus for this river. The Monastary to Big Eddy
section of Rio Chama is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Monastary to Big Eddy section is just one of them. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip.
