The Atencio Canyon to Los Pinos section of Rio de los Pinos in Rio Arriba County is 12 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Rio Arriba County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature
are great attractions for lots of people. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other spots for that. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. You
can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The river winds through the San Juan Mountains and you get great scenery. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

the most, and the driest month of the year is January. All through the months of summer, highs commonly are in the 70's at Rio de los Pinos, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's with winter lows in the-10's overnight here at Rio de los Pinos.
