The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Taos, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful New Mexico scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors     are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good places. The Close to Rio Lucio to Highway 75 stretch of Rio Embudo is 5 miles long and is a class IV-V(V+) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There are no other stretches to paddle along Rio Embudo than the Close to Rio Lucio to Highway 75 stretch. Briefly about the general area: Rio Embudo gets very little rainfall; August is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is February. Put some   time aside to spend at Souse Hole Rapid if you're here at Rio Embudo. Throughout the summertime months highs here at Rio Embudo get into the 80's while night lows are commonly in the 50's. During the winter the highs are commonly in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Rio Embudo temperatures dip to the 10's.
