Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The natural beauty of Taos/Rio Arriba County and the water flowing gracefully down Rio Grande make the trip here worthwhile. The Chiflo Campground to Little Arsenic Trail stretch of Rio Grande in Taos/Rio Arriba County is 6 miles long and it is classified as a class V section by American Whitewater. When you're paddling down a Sangre De Cristo Mountains river
like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll
find a large number of good spots. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. If you're coming from Taos it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Chiflo Campground to Little Arsenic Trail stretch is just one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping
in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Rio Grande gets very little precipitation; the wettest month of the year is usually August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is January. Yep, outdoors cool stuff truly is abundant here in
the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Big Arsenic Falls is always fun to check out; Little Arsenic Rapids is a gorgeous location to visit while you're at Rio Grande. Through the days of summer at Rio Grande temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends
down to the 40's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Rio Grande.
