CLASS II-III 40 miles
This stretch of San Francisco River in New Mexico is 40 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The nature scenery of New Mexico and the water flowing gracefully down San Francisco River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have
to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater paddling here in the San Francisco Mountains is a great experience. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national
average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so better bring your camping gear along.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the months of summer highs here at San Francisco River get into the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the
40's, and night lows at San Francisco River throughout the wintertime typically drop into the 10's. There's no way somebody can get bored here in the San Francisco Mountains. The Hogan Cabin Trail is a great hiking trail close to San Francisco River; there is a wonderful hiking
trail close by called the Red Canyon Trail. Not much precipitation falls here at San Francisco River; August is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the year is April.
