The scenic beauty of San Juan County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The starting location is a short drive from Farmington, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are no other stretches to paddle along San Juan River than the Navajo Dam to Four Corners stretch. Now this is a pretty long section, so it looks like you will be camping out. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There's camping
available near San Juan River. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good spots for that around here. The beauty of the Mesa Verde
is a great plus for this river. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New Mexico are easier than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This stretch of San Juan River is 50 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section.
Briefly about the general area: All through the summer months at San Juan River highs are frequently in the 80's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 30's while
the cold winter nights at San Juan River are in the 10's. It is very dried out here at San Juan River regularly; the wettest month of the year is commonly August, that's the one that rains the most while June is usually the driest month. A tour to Cholla Canyon is always fun.
