New York whitewater - Ausable River - West Branch, Adirondack Mountains, Essex County Essex county, High Falls Gorge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS V+     0.25 miles   The starting location is a reasonable drive from Plattsburgh, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful New York scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section of Ausable River - West Branch in Essex County is 0.25 miles long and has been rated as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not     safe for beginners. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is a very short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the High Falls Gorge stretch is just one of them. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. Briefly about the general area: Put some time aside to spend at High Falls if you're here at Ausable River - West Branch, and the summits of the Sentinel Range add much   beauty to the region. This is a really good river. There are great places to look at along the Schwartz Trail. For the period of the summertime months at Ausable River - West Branch temperatures are frequently in the 70's while nighttime lows are typically in the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 20's, and night lows during the wintertime for Ausable River - West Branch tend to be in the 0's.
