The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Plattsburgh, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The High Falls Gorge to Flume stretch of Ausable River - West Branch in New York is 2 miles long and is a class V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains     scenery is an added bonus. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The nature scenery of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Briefly about the general area: Just can't get enough of the Adirondack Mountains. High Falls Gorge is a magnificent   place to spend some time at, and a tour to High Falls will fill your soul with brilliant feelings. This is a really good river. Hit the slopes at Whiteface Mountain around here, and the Esther Mountain-Whiteface Mt. Mem. Highway is a splendid hiking trail close by. At Ausable River - West Branch during the months of summer highs are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 20's; nighttime lows in the 0's for Ausable River - West Branch. If the weather is good here at Ausable River - West Branch, you can go for a hike along the Whiteface Mountain-Whiteface Mt. Mem. Highway, and the beauty of mother nature reveals herself at The Flume Fall.
