  The nature scenery of Essex County and the water flowing gracefully down Ausable River - West Branch will make you feel great. The Monument on Route 86 to High Falls stretch of Ausable River - West Branch is 3.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV+ section. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Plattsburgh, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There arenít any
    hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that
can be paddled as well. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains scenery is an added bonus. There are campgrounds quite near the  
river where you can camp. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here.

Briefly about the general area:
Don't leave Ausable River - West Branch without first checking out Moss Cliff. There's great hiking along the Schwartz Trail, and you can hit the slopes at Whiteface Mountain in the vicinity. Coming to this river is always a good idea. The Sentinel Range towers over Ausable River - West Branch; this is a popular place for folks from Upper Jay. If you're here, you might as well have a look at Wilmington Notch, and a short visit to Monument Falls is always worthwhile.
