The Monument on Route 86 to High Falls stretch of Ausable River - West Branch in Essex County is 3.5 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV+ section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find
a large number of good spots. The put-in is not too far from Plattsburgh, as you can see on the road map further down. This is a bit of a short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. There's camping available near Ausable River - West Branch. The beauty of the Adirondack
Mountains is a great plus for this river. The wonderful Essex County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
