This section of Ausable River - West Branch in Essex County is 0.25 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V+ section. The starting location is a short drive from Plattsburgh, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful Essex County scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Since you're on this site
you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. This section is very short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while
will make you glad you came. The wild scenery of the Adirondack Mountains is great. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving.
