Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The wonderful New York scenery and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater paddling here in the Catskill Mountains is a great experience. The Swartout Road Bridge to Freehold section of Basic Creek in Albany/ Greene County is 10.3 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Basic Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Swartout Road Bridge to Freehold section is the only one. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
