The Cape Road to Route 52 section of Beer Kill River in Ulster County is 3.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V(V+) section. The wonderful New York scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are no other stretches to paddle along Beer Kill River than the Cape Road to Route 52 stretch. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near.
This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of
the sections here are not safe for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm days of summer at Beer Kill River highs are generally in the 80's while night lows are typically in the 70's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 80's, and night lows at Beer Kill River through the winter typically plunge into the 70's. Beer Kill River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; all through September this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is May.
