  If you're coming from Utica-Rome it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The wonderful New York scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great.
    The North Lake to Farr Road stretch of Black River in Herkimer/ Oneida County is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-IV section. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking
this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. When you're paddling down a Adirondack Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There arenít any hotels right  
nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The campgrounds here at Black River are pretty good.

Briefly about the general area:
There are plenty of people from Cold Brook here at Black River; the Twin Lakes Trail offers hiking at its best. Having a great time in the Adirondack Mountains is easy. Really delightful skiing awaits you at McCauley Mountain, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Forty Mountain Trail. A river like this is too good to miss. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Black River.
