The starting point is not too far from Utica-Rome, as you can see on the road map further down. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the North Lake to Farr Road stretch is just one of many. This stretch of Black River is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-IV section. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The beauty of the Adirondack Mountains is a     great plus for this river. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The campgrounds here at Black River are pretty good. Briefly about the general area: The high level of rainfall makes Black River a quite wet place; the month with most of the rain is August, and February is when it's the driest. For the period of the warmest time of the year highs here at Black River   get into the 70's with night lows in the 50's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 20's; throughout the dark hours in the winter at Black River temperatures dip to the 0's. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Black River; Twin Lakes Trail is a magnificent local trail; the Forty Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best. Now, you may feel that's lots but there's even more cool stuff to do here in the Adirondack Mountains.
