New York whitewater - Black River, Adirondack Mountains, Herkimer County
Herkimer
county,
Farr Road to Enos section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-V 8 miles
The Farr Road to Enos stretch of Black River is 8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-V section. The wonderful Herkimer County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming
back for more. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Utica-Rome, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New York you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging,
so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains scenery is an added bonus.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of rainfall makes Black River a relatively wet site; August is the wettest month with most rain, and February
meanwhile is the driest month. Through the warmest time of the year highs here at Black River reach the 70's. Summer nighttime lows sink down to the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's with temperatures at Black River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights.
And that's not all the things to do here in the Adirondack Mountains. While you're here at Black River you can take a hike along the Forty Mountain Trail. A short trip to Mulchy Spring is always worthwhile, and going for a hike along the Stone Dam Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area.
