The beautiful scenery of Herkimer County and the water flowing gracefully down Black River beats anything. The Farr Road to Enos stretch of Black River in Herkimer County is 8 miles long and is a class I-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Utica-Rome, if you're not familiar with the area there's
a road map further down the page. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers.
The campgrounds here at Black River are pretty good. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. When you're paddling down a Adirondack Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

at Black River highs are generally in the 70's with nighttime lows in the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 20's; during the dark hours in the winter at Black River temperatures plunge to the 0's. But wait, there's more enjoyable stuff to do in the
Adirondack Mountains. Hiking along the Forty Mountain Trail is wonderful fun. Black River is right by the Stone Dam Trail It's always brilliant to pop by Mulchy Spring. A lot of rain falls at Black River; most of the rain falls during August; February on the other hand is the driest.
