The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Herkimer/ Oneida County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This stretch of Black
River in New York is 6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The beauty of the Adirondack Mountains is a great plus for this river. The starting point is not too far from Utica-Rome, if you're not familiar with the area there's
a road map further down the page. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Enos to Route 72 stretch is just one of them. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Black River during the warm months are in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures drop
down into the 50's. Through the winter the highs are commonly in the 20's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Black River temperatures fall to the 0's. Crandall Falls is an inspiring location to pop by during your stay. All the water falling down from the sky makes Black River a wet place; most of the rain falls throughout September; the driest of the months is February.
