New York whitewater - Black River, Adirondack Mountains, Herkimer/ Oneida County Herkimer/ Oneida county, Enos to Route 72 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     6 miles   The scenic beauty of Herkimer/ Oneida County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The Enos to Route 72 stretch of Black River is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are     not suitable for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning trip. The starting point is not too far from Utica-Rome, as you can see on the road map further down. The beauty of the Adirondack Mountains is a great plus for this river. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: During the months of summer at Black River temperatures are frequently in the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. For the period of the   wintertime this place gets highs in the 20's; overnight lows all through the winter for Black River tend to be in the 0's. Put some time aside to spend at Crandall Falls since you're here at Black River. Black River gets a lot of water; of all the months in a year September is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is February.
