The put-in is not too far from Watertown-Fort Drum, as you can see on the road map further down. This section of Black River in New York is 1 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. The natural beauty of New York and the water flowing gracefully down Black River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so you'd better
keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end
up sleeping in your car. The Route 3 Wave section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. This is an extremely short stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: The annual precipitation here at Black River is about average; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain, and the driest month of the year is July. Through the days of summer here at Black River, high temperatures generally get into the
70's. When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 50's. Highs through the winter are regularly in the 20's, and night lows in the 0's for Black River. While staying at Black River you could always explore Rutland Hollow, and everyone close by loves skiing at Dry Hill.
