CLASS III-V     8 miles
  The Watertown to Brownville section of Black River in New York is 8 miles long and it is classified as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Jefferson County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Watertown-Fort Drum, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section is long enough to enjoy a good
    non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places.
This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Watertown to Brownville stretch is just one of them. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often more challenging than in other states,  
so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable.

Briefly about the general area:
Time spent at Gilmore Shore next to Black River is always wonderful; Westcott Beach State Park is worth visiting. Head up to Dry Hill and strap some skis to your feet; there are plenty of folks from Watertown here. This river has it all. An average amount of rainfall falls at Black River. The wettest month of the year is typically November, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is July. For the period of the summer months, highs frequently are in the 70's at Black River with overnight lows in the 50's.
