The nature scenery of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Plattsburgh, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. This section of Black River is 2.7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV+ section. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other
states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The Hawkinsville to Port Leyden stretch is the only paddling stretch along Black River. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. This is a short paddling stretch so better bring some good
walking shoes. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Black River are pretty good.
