Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often tougher than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The scenic beauty of Albany/Greene County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Catskill Creek in Albany/Greene County is 17 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The Catskill Mountains scenery is wonderful. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots
of paddling rivers. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Cooksburg to Woodstock Dam stretch is just one of many. The starting location is a reasonable
drive from Kingston, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
