New York whitewater, Cedar River

Hamilton Essex county, Wakeley Dam to Spraque Brook section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-V     8 miles
The Wakeley Dam to Spraque Brook section of Cedar River in Hamilton/Essex County is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class II-V section by American Whitewater. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are not easy. The put-in is not too far from Gloversville. You might have to settle
for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a pretty
decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. The nature scenery of New York and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Wakeley Dam to Spraque Brook section is one of them. When you're paddling down a Adirondack Mountains river like
this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near.

Briefly about the general area:
Going for a hike on the Northville Lake Placid Trail is always a pleasant adventure; you should unquestionably pop by pretty Moffit Beach while you're here. You absolutely should like the Adirondack Mountains. Go for a hike on the Sucker Brook Trail, and at Cedar River you always meet someone from Blue Mountain Lake. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Through the warm months highs here at Cedar River reach the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's.
