The nature scenery of Hamilton/Essex County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New York you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch of Cedar River is 8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater
as a class II-V section. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. There are campgrounds
quite near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Wakeley Dam to Spraque Brook section is one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Cedar River is a rather wet place mostly with a lot of precipitation; August is the wettest month with most rain while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. The warmest time of the year at Cedar River comes with high temperatures in
the 70's. Through the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 20's with temperatures at Cedar River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. The Northville Lake Placid Trail is a great hiking trail near Cedar River.
