The Lower Chateugay Lake to Cooks Mill stretch of Chateaugay River in Franklin County is 12.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-V+ section of whitewater. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too. The campgrounds here at Chateaugay River are pretty good. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that     a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The starting location is a short drive from Malone. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. This is the only paddling section along Chateaugay River. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: Chateaugay River sees pretty high levels of rain; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain; February on the other hand is the driest. High Falls is a pleasant local attraction. All through the summertime at Chateaugay River temperatures are regularly in the 70's. Throughout   the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's.
