The beautiful scenery of Franklin/ Essex/ Hamilton County and the water flowing gracefully down Cold River make the trip here worthwhile. The Duck Hole to mouth stretch of Cold River in Franklin/ Essex/ Hamilton County is 14 miles long and it is classified as a class II-V+ section by American Whitewater. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. A good
workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some
kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. The Duck Hole to mouth section is the only paddling section along Cold River.
Briefly about the general area: There are glorious locations to discover along the Seward Mountain-Corey's Road - Ward Brook Truck Trail; Millers Falls is a pretty place to check out while you're at Cold River. This is such a fun river. For the duration of the summertime months at Cold River temperatures
are usually in the 70's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Cold River are in the 0's. Be careful coming to the Adirondack Mountains, you might not ever wanna
go home again. Don't leave Cold River without first going for a hike along the Mt. Donaldson-Corey's Road - Ward Brook Truck Trail; a short visit to Big Eddy is always worthwhile. Cold River gets a common amount of rainfall; August is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is February.
