Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The wonderful New York scenery and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. is the only paddling stretch along Deer River. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch of Deer River in Lewis County is 12.4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater
as a class II-III section. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. There's camping available near Deer River.
