If you're coming from Kingston it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove.
The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful Catskill Mountains scenery is an added bonus. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The wonderful Ulster County scenery and
the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Esopus Creek in New York is 17 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Big Indian to Boiceville section is just one of many.
Briefly about the general area: From a precipitation point of view Esopus Creek is a reasonably common place; May is the month that gets
the most rain, and the driest month is February. If you're here, you might as well visit Cross Mountain Hollow, and on a delightful day you can take a hike along the Phoenicia Trail. Throughout the long summer days at Esopus Creek highs are regularly in the 70's. Once the sun
is down it sinks down to the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 20's, and overnight lows at Esopus Creek through the wintertime typically fall into the 0's. So many cool things to do in the Catskill Mountains, not enough time.
