The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. If you're coming from Kingston it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Big Indian to Boiceville stretch of Esopus Creek is 17 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. A good workout and just hanging out with mother
nature have a lot of people coming here. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight
trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The wonderful Ulster County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The wild scenery of the Catskill Mountains is great. The Big Indian to Boiceville section is one of many paddling sections in this river system.

When the night sets in temperatures fall down into the 50's. Throughout the winter highs are frequently in the 20's, and after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Esopus Creek plunge into the 0's.
