New York whitewater - Esopus Creek, Catskill Mountains, Ulster County Ulster county, Stillwater Road to Tongore Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-IV     7.5 miles   This stretch of Esopus Creek is 7.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. The beautiful scenery of Ulster County and the water flowing gracefully down Esopus Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The starting point     is not too far from Kingston, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Whitewater paddling here in the Catskill Mountains is a great experience. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Briefly about the general area: Esopus Creek gets a common amount of annual rain; May is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month is February. For the period of the summer months, highs typically are in the 70's at Esopus Creek. Once   the sun is down it dips down to the 50's.
