The scenic beauty of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The Road from Castor Hill to North Branch section of Mad River is 8 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good places. The starting point
is not too far from Watertown-Fort Drum, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are no other sections to paddle along Mad River than the Road from Castor Hill to North Branch section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get
to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: The amount of rain that falls at Mad River is close to the national average; November is when you get the most rain here, and February on the other hand is the driest. A short spree to Mad River Falls is always worthwhile, and some out of the ordinary geology is available here, Horseshoe Bend is right here. At Mad River throughout the summer months highs are in the
80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's typically in the 60's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 20's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Mad River temperatures drop to the 0's.
