The put-in is not too far from Watertown-Fort Drum, as you can see on the road map further down. The Road from Castor Hill to North Branch section of Mad River in New York is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect
for a one day trip. The nature scenery of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends
to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. Mad River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Road from Castor Hill to North Branch section is the only one. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Summer brings highs in the 80's to Mad River. Summer night lows drop down to the 60's. All through the winter highs are usually in the 20's with temperatures at Mad River dipping
down into the 0's through winter nights. The annual rainfall here at Mad River is about average; of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Mad River Falls; Horseshoe Bend is an attention-grabbing place to visit while at Mad River.
