New York whitewater, Mill Creek

Essex county, Moriah Center to Port Henry section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV-V+     5 miles
The Moriah Center to Port Henry stretch of Mill Creek in New York is 5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V+ section. The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large
number of paddling places. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. The campgrounds here at Mill Creek are pretty good. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others
too. The starting point is not too far from Glens Falls, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. The beautiful scenery of Essex County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming
back for more. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.

Briefly about the general area:
Everybody loves Button Bay Camel's Hump State Park, and don't leave Mill Creek without first going for a hike along the Rocky Peak Ridge-Route 9N - East Trail. You absolutely should love the Adirondack Mountains. D.A.R. State Park is a splendid place, and great hiking is available along the Bear Pond Trail. At this river you will never have a bad time.
