New York whitewater - Mohawk River, Oneida County Oneida county, West Branch to Hillside section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     7 miles   The put-in is not too far from Utica-Rome, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This stretch of Mohawk River     is 7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Mohawk River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the West Branch to Hillside section is the only one. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. Briefly about the general area: Throughout the long summer days highs here at Mohawk River reach the 80's. Summer overnight lows fall down to the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 20's; during the   dark hours in the winter at Mohawk River temperatures drop to the 0's. Everybody close by loves skiing at Woods Valley. Mohawk River gets a good deal of water; most of the rain falls through November, and the driest month is March.
