The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Utica-Rome, as you can see on the road map further down. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The McKeever to Rock Island stretch of Moose River is 3 miles long and has been rated as a class III section by American Whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd     better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the McKeever to Rock Island stretch is just one of many. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. The river winds through the Adirondack Mountains and you get great scenery. This is a pretty short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Moose River. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. The wintertime   brings highs down to the 20's while Moose River nighttime low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 0's. The high level of precipitation makes Moose River a quite wet location; all through the month of August you get the most rain around here; the driest month is February.
