The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often tougher than in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Utica-Rome, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Not too many     hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The McKeever to Rock Island stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The scenic beauty of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. This section is quite short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
