New York whitewater - Oswegatchie River, St. Lawrence County St. Lawrence county, Oxbow to Elmdale section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     8 miles   I went years ago with my father and boy scouts. Looking to take some old friends for a long weekend.If you could help with some info that would be greatly appreciated. Says Steven Baldes Jr. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The nature scenery of St. Lawrence County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. A good workout and just being out on the river for a     while are great reasons to come. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. The put-in location is a short drive from Watertown-Fort Drum, as you can see on the road map further down. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Oswegatchie River in St. Lawrence County is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class II section by American Whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Briefly about the general area: Oswegatchie River gets a normal amount   of annual rainfall; most of the rain falls all through August, and February meanwhile is the driest month. Through the summer highs here at Oswegatchie River get into the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. Through the winter highs are in the 20's, and throughout the dark hours in the wintertime at Oswegatchie River temperatures plunge to the 0's.
