New York whitewater, Poultney River

Washington county, US Route 4 to Carvers Falls Dam section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     4 miles
If you're coming from Rutland it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The US Route 4 to Carvers Falls Dam section of Poultney River in New York is 4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The natural beauty of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here
to paddle. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you've been whitewater rafting
and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. The campgrounds here at Poultney River are pretty good. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There are a few other sections
in this river system that can be paddled as well.

Briefly about the general area:
Half Moon Pond State Park is a great place, and there is a tremendous hiking trail nearby called the Glen Lake Trail. Places like Bomoseen State Park are delightful to stop by, and since you're here you will meet lots of folks from close by Fair Haven. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. Going for a hike on the Bomoseen Hiking Loop is always a splendid adventure. Poultney River gets a common amount of yearly rainfall. The month with most of the rain is August, and February is the month with the least moisture.
