  If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Hamilton County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The Forked Lake Campground to Deerland stretch of Raquette River in New York is 4.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater
    to be a class II-III section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers.
The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're coming from Malone it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. There are some good sections to paddle  
in this river system, the Forked Lake Campground to Deerland section is one of them. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip.

Briefly about the general area:
Put some time aside to spend at Buttermilk Falls since you're here at Raquette River. Take a hike on the Northville Lake Placid Trail; Silver Beach is quite close by if you're in a beach type of mood. This river is always fun. Have a wonderful hiking adventure along the Sucker Brook Trail, and you'll meet a lot of folks from Raquette Lake here. Raquette River usually gets a lot of rain. Of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is February.
