New York whitewater - Roeliff Jansen Kill River, Columbia County Columbia county, Bingham Mills to Route 9G section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     7 miles   I kayaked this stretch the day after a big rainstorm in a recreational kayak and it was considerably more difficult than the review makes it out to be. Several downed trees and a huge beaver dam were the worst obstacles. Bingham Mills to Dales Bridge has some dangerous spots. Dales Bridge to the Hudson River is considerably tamer but only about a 40 minute trip. I kayaked it in early June 2006. The put-in location is a short drive from Hudson. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Bingham Mills to Route 9G stretch is one of them. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The nature scenery of New York and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Not too many   hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
