The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The wonderful Ulster/ Sullivan County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night,
but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater paddling here in the Catskill Mountains is a great experience. The put-in location is a short drive from Kingston, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
This stretch of Rondout Creek in New York is 8.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Buttermilk Falls Brook to Rondout section is one of them. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Rondout Creek gets a good deal of water;
of all the months in a year November is the one with the most rain; February meanwhile is the driest month. During the days of summer here at Rondout Creek, high temperatures regularly get into the 70's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The cold days of the
winter come with highs in the 20's; after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Rondout Creek drop into the 0's. You're sure to encounter some great folks from Kingston here.
