New York whitewater - Salmon River, Adirondack Mountains, Clinton County
Clinton
county,
Military Turnpike below Schuyler Falls to Lake Champlain section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV 6.5 miles
More strainers in this river than I have ever seen, anywhere. Upper part to 87 could be a great run at about 2 1/2 feet(guage on bridge on salmon river rd.) Again, have to be aware of strainers, most are river wide. Dont bother with 87 east to lake champlain, mostly flat with over twenty beaver dams. Lots of leaches. Says Doug Hilderbrandt
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The starting point is not too far from
Plattsburgh, as you can see on the road map further down. On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This is the only paddling stretch along Salmon River. The Military
Turnpike below Schuyler Falls to Lake Champlain section of Salmon River in Clinton County is 6.5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater. No need to look hard for hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nature scenery of Clinton County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. The Adirondack Mountains scenery is wonderful. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking
this is an area with plenty of places for that.
Briefly about the general area: Why not explore Bluff Point also since you're here; close by Valcour Shoal is a delightful site to go. Salmon River gets a typical amount of annual rain; August is when you get the most rain
here; the driest month of the year is February. Throughout the summer at Salmon River temperatures are typically in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 20's, and night lows during the winter for Salmon River tend to be in the 0's. So many exciting things in the Adirondack Mountains, just remarkable.
