If you're coming from Plattsburgh it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful New York scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New York you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you
came. The Military Turnpike below Schuyler Falls to Lake Champlain section of Salmon River in Clinton County is 6.5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that
around here. The river winds through the Adirondack Mountains and you get great scenery. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There's camping available near Salmon River. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. This is the only paddling section along Salmon River.

to pay a visit to Valcour Shoal if you're here at Salmon River. Through the summertime months highs here at Salmon River reach the 70's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 50's. During the wintertime this place gets highs in the 20's with temperatures
at Salmon River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. So much fun stuff to do in the Adirondack Mountains, not sufficient time. Salmon River gets a normal amount of annual rainfall; throughout August this area sees the most rain while February is mostly the driest month.
