New York whitewater, Sandburg Creek

Sullivan Ulster county, Falls below Mountain Dale to Old 20 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV     5.5 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. This section of Sandburg Creek is 5.5 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful New York scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here
to paddle. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll
find a large number of good places. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. The Falls below Mountain Dale to Old 20 section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular
destination.

Briefly about the general area:
The wonderful people of Ellenville like to hang out close by, and hiking along the Vernooy Falls Trail is good fun. Minnewaska State Park Preserve is a glorious place to stretch your legs a bit, and why not head up to Holiday Mountain and strap some skis to your feet. This river is a great place to visit. Sandburg Creek is a wet location that gets a good deal of rainfall. The wettest month of the year is commonly May, that's the one that rains the most, and February is when it's the driest. Through the warm days of summer highs here at Sandburg Creek get into the 70's; the night is somewhat cooler of course, generally in the 50's.
