New York whitewater - Saranac River, Adirondack Mountains, Clinton County Clinton county, Union Falls to Silver Lake Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     4 miles   This stretch of Saranac River is 4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The put-in location is a short drive from Plattsburgh, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people     coming here. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The beautiful scenery of New York and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Union Falls to Silver Lake Road section is just one of many. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The beauty of the Adirondack Mountains is a great plus for this river. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about the general area: While you're here at Saranac River you can take a hike along the Silver Lake Mountain Trail, and if the weather is great, you can go for a hike along the Schwartz Trail.   Summer brings highs in the 70's to Saranac River; the nighttime is quite chillier of course, mostly in the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 20's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Saranac River dip into the 0's. Saranac River is a wet place that gets a good deal of precipitation; August is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is February.
