The average New York whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The scenic beauty of Ulster County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Meads Mountain Road bridge to Chestnut Hill Road stretch is one of them. If you're coming from Kingston it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the
area there's a road map further down the page. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. This section of Saw Kill River is 5.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-V section of whitewater. Not
too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The beauty of the Catskill Mountains is a great plus for this river. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip.
