CLASS II-III 3.5 miles
If you're coming from Amsterdam it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. This stretch of Schoharie Creek in New York is 3.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The river winds through the Catskill Mountains and you get great scenery.
Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might be into whitewater
rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. The beautiful scenery of New York and the water flowing gracefully down Schoharie Creek have people coming here. This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Near Schoharie Creek you stumble on Shew Hollow which
is a great spot to pop by, and a short visit to Mine Kill Falls is always worthwhile. All through the summertime months at Schoharie Creek temperatures are mostly in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 20's,
and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Schoharie Creek. The high level of rain makes Schoharie Creek a rather wet site; June is the month that gets the most rain, and February is when it's the driest.
