If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way
this is an area with plenty of places for that. If you're coming from Torrington it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Ten Mile River doesn't
have a lot of paddling stretches, the Wassaic to NY line stretch is the only one. The natural beauty of Dutchess County and the water flowing gracefully down Ten Mile River make the trip here worthwhile.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summertime here at Ten Mile River, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 80's, and the night is fairly cooler of course, usually in the 50's. Throughout the wintertime highs are usually in the 30's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Ten Mile River dip into the 10's.
Going for a hike on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is always a splendid adventure. From a rain point of view Ten Mile River is a reasonably common location; June is the month that gets the most rain; the driest of the months is January.
