The starting location is a reasonable drive from Amsterdam, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of West Creek is 5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This stretch is mid length, it's good length for a morning
trip. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so don't forget that quite a few of the
sections here are not easy. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The natural beauty of Schoharie County and the water flowing gracefully down West Creek will make you feel great. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the days of summer highs here at West Creek get into the 70's; the night is rather cooler of course,
typically in the 50's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in the 20's while the cold winter nights at West Creek are in the 10's. All the water falling down from the sky makes West Creek a wet place; through the month of June you get the most rain around here; February meanwhile is the driest month.
