If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Route 1772 to Route 2080 stretch of Ararat River is 21.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The wonderful Surry County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great.
You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular
destination. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. There are no other stretches to paddle along Ararat River than the Route 1772 to Route 2080 stretch. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Ararat River is a relatively wet place commonly with a lot of rain; through May this area sees the most rain; January is when it's the driest. During the warm months at Ararat
River highs are usually in the 80's. Summer night lows sink down to the 50's. All through the winter the highs are usually in the 40's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Ararat River fall into the 20's.
