Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This stretch of Big Creek in Haywood County is 5.4 miles long and is a class V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The beautiful scenery of Haywood County and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful Great Smoky Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect
for a one day trip. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Newport, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There's camping available near Big Creek. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Big Creek a wet place; May is the month that gets the most rain, and October is the month with the least moisture. Going for a hike on the Big Branch Trail is always a great adventure, and don't leave Big
Creek without first paying a visit to Mouse Creek Falls. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Big Creek. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 60's. Daytime highs throughout the winter are in the 40's, and overnight lows at Big Creek throughout the
wintertime generally sink into the 20's. And if that's not enough there's a heap more fun things to do in the Great Smoky Mountains. Near Big Creek you discover the Baxter Creek Trail which is a great hiking trail It's always fine to stop by Brakeshoe Spring. This river is so great. A splendid spot to visit in the neighborhood of Big Creek is Poplar Cove.
