If you're coming from Newport it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Haywood County and the water flowing gracefully down Big Creek have people coming here. The Walnut Bottom to NPS Campground section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away
from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater
rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina are easier than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The river winds through the Great Smoky Mountains and you get great scenery. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip.
Briefly about the general area: This river has it all. There's splendid hiking along the Big Branch
Trail. At Big Creek through the months of summer highs are in the 80's while night lows are usually in the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Big Creek. Mouse Creek Falls is an inspiring spot to go to
while you're here; don't leave Big Creek without first going for a hike along the Baxter Creek Trail. Life's too short to enjoy all the enjoyable stuff in the Great Smoky Mountains. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Brakeshoe Spring, and you might also want to pay
a visit to Poplar Cove if you're here at Big Creek. All the water falling down from the sky makes Big Creek a wet place; all through May this area sees the most rain, and October is the month with the least moisture.
