Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in North Carolina tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The campgrounds here at Big Creek are pretty good. The starting point is not too far from Newport, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll
find lots of paddling places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains is a great plus for this river. This
is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. The NPS Campground to Confluence with Big Pigeon section of Big Creek in North Carolina is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV section. This is a pretty short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: Davenport Gap is near Big Creek and
is undeniably a good site to stop at, and you can go for a hike on the Baxter Creek Trail. All through the summertime months here at Big Creek, high temperatures ordinarily reach the 80's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 40's,
and overnight lows all through the wintertime for Big Creek tend to be in the 20's.
