North Carolina whitewater - Big Creek, Great Smoky Mountains, Haywood County
Haywood
county,
NPS Campground to Confluence with Big Pigeon section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV 2 miles
This stretch of Big Creek is 2 miles long and it is classified as a class IV section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Haywood County and the water flowing gracefully down Big Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The put-in is not too far from Newport, please print out
a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state
are quite easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great.
Briefly about the general area: Now, you may feel that's loads but there's even more amusing things to do here in the
Great Smoky Mountains. Go for a hike on the Baxter Creek Trail. There are wonderful places to discover along the Big Branch Trail, and Davenport Gap is close at hand, and is a perfect site. Big Creek sees pretty high levels of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is commonly
May, that's the one that rains the most while October is mostly the driest month. Throughout the long summer days highs here at Big Creek get into the 80's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Big Creek are in the 20's.
