CLASS IV 2 miles
This stretch of Big Creek is 2 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. This is a bit of a short stretch so better bring some
good walking shoes. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The starting location is a short drive from Newport, if you're not familiar
with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater paddling here in the Great Smoky Mountains is a great experience. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Davenport Gap is a splendid spot to explore; the Big Branch Trail offers hiking at its best. So much entertaining stuff in the Great Smoky Mountains, just incredible. Why not take a refreshing
hike along the Baxter Creek Trail. Big Creek sees pretty high levels of rainfall; May is when you get the most rain here while October is commonly the driest month. For the duration of the warmest time of the year, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at Big Creek with overnight
lows in the 60's. Through the winter highs are mostly in the 40's with temperatures at Big Creek dipping down into the 20's during winter nights.
