Stokes
county,
Forrest Road to Lynchburg Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III(IV) 3.5 miles
The natural beauty of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The Forrest Road to Lynchburg Road section of Big Creek in Stokes County is 3.5 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. Big Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Forrest Road to Lynchburg Road stretch is the only one. If you're coming from Winston-Salem it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get
lost. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few
times. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: Summer at Big Creek arrives with high temperatures in the
80's. Through the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 60's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Big Creek. Don't leave Big Creek without first going for a hike along the Moores Knob Trail, and there's
perfect hiking along the Cascade Trail. Big Creek gets much water; July is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the year is January.
