The to French Broad River stretch of Brush Creek in Madison County is 5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Greeneville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if
you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. A bit of exercise and just being out on
the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. There are no other stretches to paddle along Brush Creek than the to French Broad River stretch. The scenic beauty of Madison County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: Brush Creek is a wet location that gets a lot of rain; through July this area sees the most rain while
October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Throughout the long summer days, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at Brush Creek with nighttime lows in the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are regularly in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Brush Creek are in the 20's. A wonderful location to visit close to Brush Creek is Mulberry Gap.
