Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The wonderful Chatham/Harnett/Cumberland County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch
has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The Avents Ferry to Erwin section of Cape Fear in Chatham/Harnett/Cumberland County is 24 miles long and is a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in is not too
far from Dunn, as you can see on the road map further down. Cape Fear doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Avents Ferry to Erwin stretch is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: Hiking along the Group Camp Trail is glorious fun. Cape Fear generally gets much rainfall; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain; September is when it's the driest. Summer brings highs in the 80's to Cape Fear, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and overnight
lows at Cape Fear through the winter regularly drop into the 20's. Going for a hike along the Little Creek Loop Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this neighborhood, and there are plenty of folks from Dunn here.
